Homeopathy is a healthcare system that recognises how illness affects the whole person, acknowledging that the mind, body and emotions are interwoven. Each one of us responds to being unwell in a different way. When we develop an illness, the way we experience our symptoms is unique to us.
As a prescriber, I fully engage in the active-listening role of the homeopath, adapting my approach so each individual can express their symptoms, tell their truth, and explore themselves free from any prejudice.
Understanding your uniqueness
I will give you the space you need to open up, talking freely about yourself and your responses to being unwell. The consultation is an opportunity to explore your health in an open and safe space, with time to understand the circumstances that have led you here.
I aim to get to know the details of your symptoms — not just what they are, but how they affect you, what makes them better or worse and what impact they have on your life. The process then involves branching out from your main problem to speak about yourself more generally: your nature, habits, how you respond to stress and how you are when healthy.
How you experience this state of ill health, as well as your experience of the more positive things in life like hobbies and interests, are all discussed. It is important to put the symptoms you have into the context of your experience and individuality; the whole picture of your mind-body health.
Mind, body and emotions
You are listened to in a non-judgmental and empathetic way so that you can learn more about yourself and how you respond to being unwell. My interest is in you as an individual, as well as the condition that has brought you to the consultation.
How many times can we refer back to a traumatic event, grief or loss as being a trigger for a downturn in health? Exploring when things changed, and what was happening in your life at the time, is part of understanding the whole picture.
The homeopathic approach takes into account your metabolism, hormones, digestion, sleep pattern, nerves, thoughts and emotions. These are all aspects of your experience that can help me understand how you respond to being unwell.
Individualised prescribing
The homeopathic principle of “like cures like” guides the choice of a similar remedy: matching the characteristic pattern of your symptoms with the picture of a substance recorded in homeopathic provings. A proving records the experiences reported by healthy people taking a substance; the materia medica brings these remedy pictures together.
The distinction between symptoms common to a diagnosis and those particular to the person is central to this process. Two people with the same condition may differ in what they find comforting, their sleep, thirst, response to temperature, or what makes their symptoms better or worse. These differences help guide the prescription. I explore this distinction further in Homeopathic treatment: individualised medicine treats the person.
Homeopathic remedies are derived from plant, mineral and animal sources and are prescribed in an attenuated, or diluted, dose. They may be given as medicated tablets or drops. The choice of remedy is based on your individual response to being unwell.
After the consultation, I take time to understand your case and find the most fitting prescription. Case analysis draws on the repertory, an index of symptoms and their associated remedies, and the materia medica. I also explore patterns through the Mappa Mundi, or Circle of Elements, looking at food cravings, the conditions that alter symptoms, physical affinities and psychological characteristics. My writing and software tools grow out of this interest in understanding and organising homeopathic knowledge.
The consultation and follow-up
Your first appointment usually lasts around 75 minutes. At the end of the consultation, we will discuss our plan going forward. We can also discuss measures you can take for yourself, such as dietary or lifestyle changes.
Follow-up appointments give us time to discuss what has changed and review the prescription in the context of your health as a whole.
